D. Kamakani Lum is from Waimanalo, Hawai'i on the island of O'ahu and is a graduate of The Kamehameha Schools.
When she was young her grandfather, Eben Kahauolopua, taught her how to lomilomi his tired and aching kino or body when he came home from working and playing. Her uncles would also come over and she soon realized she was the "chosen one" when her cousins would sneak outside to play, leaving her alone to lomi her elders. She never considered it to be a special kind of skill, it was just a way of life and her way to kokua or help and malama or take care of her 'ohana or family, as part of her Hawaiian heritage.
By the time she was in high school, it was all about balancing her studies with her love for running and paddling canoe. Eventually, her education led her into the field of electronics and cable.
Finally, having enough of working in the cable industry for over twenty years, and needing to find the deeper "meaning of life", she returned to her roots and to lomilomi - to practice and perpetuate the Hawaiian values handed down through time from her Kupuna or ancestors and still vital to the mana or divine power, strength and foundation of her people - and all people - today.
Her compassion for all life and her connection to Spirit are felt through her hands when she does her work.

To those who have shared and passed on the wisdom and knowledge of our ancestors; my Kupuna and Kumu - past, present and to come - and to their Kumu. Mahalo.
